Cubbies Earn Hard Fought Split

The Cubbies got off to a quick start with 3 straight hits in the top of the first, the Gandy boys followed by POW Lee McDonald, to take the lead with no outs. After a ground out, Aaron Nutt ribbied to make the score 2-0 but the rally fizzled there and the Cubs were only able to put 3 more on the board the rest of the way as they were paced by a home run barrage from the Rangers.

In game 2 our beloved Cubbies got back on track.  It wasn’t the bats but the deft pitching of Papa Gandy, earning Cub ROW honor by recovering from a tough game 1 to keep nearly the entire lineup of the Grasshoppers (Tip of the cap to Jose Baho) at bay, surrendering only 2 runs and adding a 3-3 to help his cause. A nifty play by Nutt smothered a rally int the 5th inning to keep the lead at 3-2 for the Cubs. Nutt, diving to his left gloved a screamer up the middle, flipped to Sean Harcourt without getting up, who handily threw out the runner at first for the inning ending double play.

This ultimately provided the spark the Cubs had been looking for as the bats finally woke up in the 6th when a little breathing room was needed going into the last inning up only 3-2 with Nutt driving a run across followed by a 2 run scoring single by Erik Clausen to close to scoring at 6.
