Game 1: Corny Dogs at 66ers

An unfortunately timed sickness left the Corny Dogs short handed with an automatic out in their lineup. With the cards stacked against them they decided to lean on the power of positivity as they headed into a matchup with Turbo Golden and his 66ers. Taylor Abrego set the tone early by drawing a walk, followed by back to back doubles by Miguel Duron and Nick Barr into the blinding light of Field 2. Mitch Klaassen would also double in the inning setting the table for Rookie Jason Simmons making his Shalom debut. Simmons singled and briefly captured the highest batting average in league history as the Corny Dogs took an early four run lead.

With two outs in the second inning, once again the Dogs were able to capitalize with their patience as leadoff hitter Tony Macaluso drew a walk. Abrego muscled a HR off the end of his bat, and Duron followed with a no doubt dinger of his own as the “Softball Team on a Stick™” took a commanding lead.

The bats went largely quiet for the next couple frames before Barr led off the 5th inning with a HR. Simmons followed with a laser shot over the left field wall for his first career HR leaving the bases clean for the bottom of the lineup. Jim Finley and Ozzie Zurita each reached with singles and Captain Cesar Garza mashed a double to drive in a run.

Brad Parr was phenomenal on the hill notching a few strikeouts and avoiding a line drive shot off the bat of Lacy Fenn as the Corny Dogs cruised to the 13-2 victory.

Game 2: Corny Dogs at Tiburones

Looking for their first sweep of the season the shorthanded Dogs headed over to field 3 for a matchup against Sardi’s Tiburones. Early defensive miscues spotted the Sharks an early 6-1 heading into the 4th inning. Abrego would start the inning with a single, and once again a big walk sparked the offense as Duron begrudgingly took his free pass to set the table for cleanup hitter. Barr deposited his 2nd HR of the day over the left field wall and left the score 6-4 heading into the 5th inning.

The Corny dogs would take their first lead of the game in the following inning. The trio of Finley and Garza sandwiched doubles around a Zurita single to get the offense rolling, and Abrego put the Dogs up with a 2RBI single.

The Tiburones were able to plate the tying run, but Abrego made an excellent throw to nab the potential go ahead run trying to advance to third. Mitch Klaassen hit his 4th double of the day and scored the go ahead run for the Corny Dogs, but the lead was short lived when the Sharks plated a pair in the bottom of the inning.

The ketchup was thwarted in the 7th when a Zurita would be single was wiped out by a strong throw from RCF by Andy “butt” Hoelscher. With the automatic out at the bottom of the lineup the Dogs were unable to flip the lineup. Nonetheless the Corny Dogs showed great fight and remain poised to make a run at a playoff spot. Big games this week against current 4 seed Muck’s Ducks and Dyer’s Cannonballers.
