Week 1: What’s in a name? Would a Corny Dog without a stick taste so great?

Short answer is no. The brown clad Corny Dogs entered week one with high aspirations and boasting a lineup with potential to be one of the more potent in the league. Leo Cova and his Leones set out to prove the game is not played on paper and accomplished just that. Leadoff man Dylan “Burhow” Buhrow started the season off on a high note with a single to right to start the season off, however the offense sputtered from the start and was only able to muster a few hits over the first four innings. The only extra base hit came from the bat of “Weiner of the week” Ashley Mort with a second inning double. In the top of the fifth the Dogs showed signs of life as Justin Howard singled to start the inning, Mort walked, and Cesar Garza drove in the first run of the season with a single. Dustin Madlock would add to the lead with a sacrifice fly, but that would be the end scoring.

Game 2 of the day saw the Corny Dogs move to Field 1 to face Pease and his Storm Chasers. Unfortunately the script was much the same, D. Burhow singled to lead off the game followed by an hour straight of Corny Dogs unsuccessfully trying to overpower the strong wind blowing in from left field. Pitcher Jon Kilburn mashed a solo dinger in the second for the first Corny Dog homer of the season. Mort continued his hot start with another double, but ultimately the offense simply did not do enough to earn a week 1 victory.

Week 2: Walks Softly and Carry a Big Stick
A shift in the wind brought new hope to the still bronze clad bombers as the took on Brandon Alford and his Crawdads. The Corny Dogs jumped out to an early first inning lead with a three spot. The Kilburn boys Jon and Liam drove in the runs. The Dogs would chip in a couple more in the second Daniel Buhrow drew a walk, followed by a Garza walk, Dylan and David would bring them in with back to back singles and by innings end the total runs from the week prior had been surpassed. Unfortunately for the boys in brown the Crawdads answered with a 13 spot in the bottom of the frame. A couple timely defensive miscues and a patient eye from the Alford crew left the dogs looking to ketchup. A consistent offensive approach over the next couple innings including yet another Mort double and shortstop Ben Neyen were not enough as the damage had been done.

Looking to avoid an 0-4 start the Softball team on a Stick moved over to field 1 to take on Uncle Ron and his Forniglia heavy Mudcats. Neyen started the two out rally in the first with a single, followed by a double by Captain Nick Barr, setting the stage for birthday boy Jon Kilburn to mash his second HR of the season. Corny Dogs would send 17 men to the plate in the second while putting up a season high 12 runs. Mort started the inning with a double, Madlock and CC Coffman were able to flip the lineup. David Buhrow drove in a pair with a double of his own before Barr squeaked his first HR of the season over the fence. Every Corny Dog reached base in the inning. Pitching woes allowed the Mudcats to stay in the game, but the Killbomber closed the door with his second dinger of the game and the Corny Dogs were able to hang on for their first victory of the season.

The Corny Dogs head into the second quarter of the Fall season with a 1-3 record and tough matchups with the Tarpons, Dragons, Blue Rocks and Empire 66ers on the docket. With their new maroon jerseys they begin their push towards a playoff spot.
