The Yard Goats came into Sunday on a modest two game winning streak trying to get back in the playoff race. Game 1 was against Reese’s Spartanburgers. A leadoff home run by Ashley Mort (first of the season), started the scoring. Joe Calvano added a solo shot. Junior Nieves hit a two run double followed by a single from Jonathan Braun. 5-1 Goats! 5 more in the second, came from a grand slam by Darius Wu and Calvano’s second solo shot. Mort’s second home run of the season and game was a 3 run blast as the Goat’s built a 14-1 lead after 3. Defensive breakdowns in the 4th gave the Burgers 7 to keep the game going. Time did run out in the 5th as the Goats triumphed 15-10.

Game 2 was against the Chiefs. A two run homer by Wu and an RBI single from Doc Watson, gave the Goats an early 3-0 lead. A bases loaded single from Wu knocked in two in the third to increase the lead to 5-1. The Chiefs scored 3 in the bottom of the third before the wheels fell off in the 4th for the Goat defense as the Chiefs scored 6 more to lead 10-5. The Goats could only scratch out one more run, as they went down 10-6.

Batting stars were Joe Calvano 4-6 with 2 doubles and two homers, Darius Wu 3-5, 2 homers and 8 ribbies. Ashley Mort went 3-4 with 2 homers and two walks. Doc Watson went 3-4 with 2 walks in a subbing role. Jonathan Braun was 3-5 and Jon Simonson 3-6. With playoff hopes on life support, the Goats continue on next week.
