Week 5 saw the Mariners open against the Grasshoppers in the 8am Early Bird Special. After the Hoppers opened with 3, the Mariners roared back with a 5 spot on 7 hits. RBI’s were from Ryan Driggers, Pete Salazar, Kyle Crouse (2) and Jon Simonson. 6 more Mariner runs in the second were highlighted by a Driggers grand slam. A Matt Hyson 2 run dinger in the 3rd had the Mariners sporting a comfortable 13-6 lead. At this point, the Hoppers bats awoke and Hopper pitcher Scott Greenberg started pitching beebees as the Grasshoppers came from behind to pull out a crushing 17-13 win.

Game 2 was against the hard luck Marauders who came in searching for their first W of the season. The Marauder hopes were high as they commanded an 8-4 lead after 2. This time it was the Mariners turn to pull out a come from behind win as 7 home runs helped the cause with the wind blowing out on field 3 for the first time this season. Matt ”Grand Slam” Hyson had to settle for a 3 run dinger this game for his first week without a slam in a month. Tim Jamieson had a two run shot, Ryan Driggers had a huge solo blast that cleared the second tall fence plus a 3 run blast. Kyle Crouse, Troy Steele and Jon Simonson all got their first blasts of the season as the Mariners won 19-10.

Matt Hyson was our Player of the Week with 8-8, 7 runs scored, 5 RBI’s and 2 home runs. Pete Salazar was our ROW with 5-7, 2 2B’s, 3 runs and an RBI. Tim Jamieson went 6-7, Kyle Crouse 5-6, Ryan Driggers 6-8, John Miller and Tommy Baer 4-6, Troy Steele 4-8 and Robbie Franklin 3-6. Ryan Driggers and Robbie Franklin were our defensive MVP’s on the day battling a tough sun at 1B.
